It then follows the undulating ridge dividing the Wairoa River from Crozier Stream to a low saddle. From there a short spur track leads down to Tarn Hut. Mt Rintoul Hut to Tarn Hut Mt Rintoul Hut: 5 hr (9 km) From Rintoul Hut the track leads through mountain beech forest to climb the scree and rock faces of Purple Top (1532 m), before descending down the main summit ridge. Tarn Hut is to the east of the main ridge, and is reached on a sign-posted access track. Tracks to the hut: Alpine Route.
