Getting there
Lower Goulter Hut to Tarn Hut
Lower Goulter Hut: 6 hr (9.3 km)
From Lower Goulter Hut the track climbs steeply, then more steadily up a spur to the summit of Bushy Top. It then follows the undulating ridge dividing the Wairoa River from Crozier Stream to a low saddle. From there a short spur track leads down to Tarn Hut.
Mt Rintoul Hut to Tarn Hut
Mt Rintoul Hut: 5 hr (9 km)
From Rintoul Hut the track leads through mountain beech forest to climb the scree and rock faces of Purple Top (1532 m), before descending down the main summit ridge. The route then sidles across the southern face of Bishops Cap (1425 m) to join the main forested spur to the south. Tarn Hut is to the east of the main ridge, and is reached on a sign-posted access track.
Tracks to the hut: Alpine Route.
Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 6 or 12-month period.
