Waiau Hut

Description
This is a standard 6-bunk hut located in the St James Conservation Area. Fees apply. Bookings not required - first come, first served.
Waiau Hut is in a sheltered clearing on the Waiau River. Facilities include heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and water (not treated - boil before use).
This hut is on the Te Araroa Trail and can be busy over summer.
Motorised access over Maling Pass is closed during the winter, if the track is wet or there is high fire danger.
There is usually snow in St James Conservation Area over winter.
The hut is on Waiau Pass Track, which connects Nelson Lakes National Park and St James Conservation Area.

Blue Lake Hut: 10-12 hr via the Lewis Pass - Waiau Pass Track - Blue Lake Route
Waiau River: 2 hr. Waiua River can be accessed via the Maling Pass 4WD track. Find out about motorised vehicle access
Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night's stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. Or buy a Backcountry Hut Pass that gives unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 6 or 12-month period.
