Whataroa Gorge Freedom Camping

Description
Westland District Council Designated Responsible Freedom Camping Area. Freedom Camping is permitted in both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles.
**CAUTION: During rain there is a high risk of fast flooding all the way up to the road. Campers should monitor weather forecasts. Keep your vehicle off the riverbed, there is a risk of getting stuck.**
Keep New Zealand clean. Always use the toilet in your vehicle or a public toilet.
You may stay for no more than five nights in any calendar month but limited to three consecutive nights at any single location.
The local service station's phone number for breakdowns and tow trucks is +6437534144. Vehicles get stuck regularly due to driver's pulling off the gravel road or going onto the river bed and then have to walk several KMs back out for help. Please take care and stick to the road as being so remote this the only option/company available.
